Once a familiar part of everyday dressing, brooches have perhaps been overlooked in recent years in favour of necklaces, earrings and bracelets. But it is time we changed that. Why are brooches making a comeback?
A brooch is wonderfully versatile. Unlike many pieces of jewellery, it can be worn in several ways. Pin one to a favourite jacket or coat, add one to a cardigan or blazer, or use a smaller vintage brooch to add a little something extra to a scarf or handbag. And because vintage brooches come in so many different sizes, shapes and styles, there really is something for everyone.
From delicate floral designs and sparkling crystal pieces to colourful enamel, animal motifs, Art Deco-inspired shapes and bold statement designs, a brooch can be as subtle or as eye-catching as you want it to be. Perhaps that’s part of their appeal.

One of the things I love most about brooches is that they can say something about the person wearing them.
A sparkling vintage brooch can instantly dress up a simple black jacket. A bold enamel flower can add a pop of colour to an otherwise understated outfit. An unusual animal or novelty brooch can become a great talking point.
Brooches allow the wearer to express themselves in ways other jewellery items can’t match.
How to wear a vintage brooch today
1. On a blazer
Perhaps the easiest place to start. Add a vintage brooch to the lapel of a blazer for a timeless look.
2. On your favourite coat
A beautiful brooch can transform any coat and make it feel completely different.
3. With knitwear
Try adding a brooch to a cardigan, jumper or knitted jacket. It is a lovely way to make everyday pieces feel a little more special.
4. On a scarf
A smaller brooch can be used to secure or decorate a scarf, adding an unexpected touch of vintage sparkle.
5. Think beyond clothing
Don’t be afraid to experiment. Brooches can also look beautiful pinned to a handbag or attached to a hat.
