Alexandra and Simon were recently spotted on Bargain Hunt after being invited to guess the mystery object during filming.
The show was being filmed at the Uttoxeter Racecourse Antiques Fair, where the pair were enjoying a day browsing antiques when they were approached by the Bargain Hunt Team and presenter Natasha Raskin Sharp.
Natasha was quizzing fair-goers about an intriguing little tool.
Guessing the Mystery Object
“It’s made of two metals, has rotating blades, and fits in the palm of your hand. What on earth is it?”
Simon was quick with a confident answer. “It’s definitely for cutting paper,” he said.
After a bit of discussion, the pair settled on the idea that it must be some sort of paper cutter. Perhaps for wallpaper, or even an artist’s tool for… you guessed it… cutting paper.

Alexandra later said the experience was a really interesting one. “Meeting Natasha and the Bargain Hunt team was lovely. We spent a few minutes chatting about our hobbies and collections.”
The conversation soon turned to antiques and collectibles, including paper cutters, vintage jewellery, uranium glass, Staffordshire pottery, and dollhouses.
Fast forward a few months, and Alexandra and Simon were amazed to hear that they had actually appeared on television.
The programme first aired on 31st October 2025, and it didn’t take long for local viewers to recognise them. Friends and family soon started getting in touch after spotting them on screen.
“It was a bit of a whirlwind and definitely a good bit of fun,” Alexandra said.
Looking back on the experience, she added: “Guessing the mystery item is probably our five seconds of fame. Everyone was so lovely, and I’m really glad we bravely accepted their invitation.”

Blink and you might miss them, but Alexandra and Simon can proudly say:
“Hi Mum… we’re on TV!”
The Mystery Object Revealed
So what was the intriguing little tool that had everyone guessing?
The answer was a Vintage Morgan-Lee Wallpaper Trimmer.
These clever little tools were designed to neatly trim wallpaper edges while hanging decorative wall coverings. The rotating blades allowed decorators to create clean, precise cuts along seams, skirting boards, and corners.
Although Simon and Alexandra where convinced it was for cutting paper, which technically isn’t too far off, the tool was actually intended specifically for wallpaper trimming.
The compact design meant it could fit comfortably in the palm of your hand, making it easy for decorators to guide along the edge of freshly hung wallpaper.
It just goes to show that sometimes the mystery object on Bargain Hunt really can stump even the most enthusiastic antique hunters!
